The Feast of the Assumption of Mary

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Mother of God assumes to Heaven.

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is celebrated every year on August 15th.

This Feast commemorates the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul into Heaven. The doctrine was formally defined as a dogma of the Catholic Church in 1950 through the apostolic constitution “Munificentissimus Deus.” It states: “The bodily Assumption of God’s Mother into heaven can be defined as a dogma of faith, since it shows us the concordant teaching of the Church’s ordinary doctrinal authority and the concordant faith of the Christian people which the same doctrinal authority sustains and directs, thus by itself and in an entirely certain and infallible way, manifests this privilege as a truth revealed by God and contained in that divine deposit which Christ has delivered to his Spouse to be guarded faithfully and to be taught infallibly” (12).

Why is the assumption of Mary important?

For Catholics, this day holds a special spiritual significance. Here is why:

It honors Mary’s role: her assumption into Heaven is a testament to her special relationship with her Son and her role in the salvation of souls, being a mediator of Christ.

It is connected to Christ’s resurrection: just as Christ conquered sin and death, so did Mary through His Grace. This connection reinforces the hope of resurrection and eternal life for all believers.

It affirms that Mary is the best intercessor: her assumption confirms her existence in Heaven and her ability to intercede for the faithful. This gives us comfort in that we have a loving motherly figure to turn to in times of need.

As the Feast of the Assumption of Mary approaches, Catholics worldwide gather to celebrate this feast day through special Masses, processions, and prayers. It’s a time of joy and reflection, an opportunity to deepen one’s understanding of Mary’s role in the faith and to contemplate the promise of eternal life.
